Music

Collie Senior High School has a well-established music program provided by Instrumental Music School Services, commonly known as the School of Instrumental Music,  that provides selected students with tuition in a range of musical instruments. Students can apply to join the program when enrolling at the school.

The instrumental classes that we offer include:

Brass: Baritone, French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet

Guitar: Classical & Bass

Percussion

Woodwind: Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone

All instrumental students participate in Class Music as part of their timetable because this provides the theoretical background necessary for satisfactory progress through the program. Many instruments are available for hire during the first year of tuition, while others may be available for loan through the school library. Learners are usually expected to buy a suitable instrument after the first year of tuition.

Pupils who started learning brass or woodwind instruments in primary school continue this program and are usually able to play in the Collie Combined Schools' Concert Band after their first year of playing. The band often combines with the Donnybrook Concert Band allowing a valuable partnership to result in higher outcomes for all students.

Our band members often participate in the WA Performing Arts Eisteddfod and the Queen’s Cup and we offer band camps during some years.  They also perform during assemblies and public events at the school and in the community, including the Christmas Pageant and Carols by Candlelight.

The guitar and bass guitar program commences in Year 7 and offers a great opportunity to learn to read and play music, as well as participation in the Guitar Ensemble that plays for school functions and community groups.

An enthusiastic parent committee helps to support the program and often assists with arrangements for the two Arts Evenings that are held throughout the year, which also showcases the wonderful talent we have within the school.
